3 Tips to Prevent Plumbing Issues

Plumbing is one of those amenities that we’re so accustomed to, we don’t give much thought to how often we rely on it. For instance, from filling the carafe for a fresh pot of coffee or taking a morning shower, to watering the lawn, starting the dishwasher, or flushing the toilet, when the plumbing is working as it should, it’s easy to take for granted.

Three Tips to Prevent Plumbing Issues

However, once something goes awry such as a clogged toilet, leaking faucet, or frozen pipes, it only takes a few moments to realize how important it is to have dependable plumbing.

Fortunately, many plumbing issues can be avoided by implementing the following preventative maintenance steps.

Tip #1 Winterize Plumbing Systems

There’s no denying that here in Saratoga, NY, winters can be cold and brutal. Even when it’s not snowing, the winds and freezing temperatures can wreak havoc on your plumbing if it hasn’t been properly winterized inside and out.

To prevent outdoor pipes and spigots from freezing, disconnect all hoses or attachments and drain any excess water. Additionally, any pipes exposed to the outdoor elements should be insulated.

In regards to indoor plumbing, consider reducing the temperature on the water heater to increase efficiency. It’s also a good practice to allow faucets to drip slowly during freezing temperatures to avoid frozen pipes.

Tip #2: Avoid Clogs

Without a doubt, a clogged toilet or slow draining sink can be annoying, but if left unchecked, may result in damaged pipes.

A few preventative measures include:

  • Drain strainers. Simply by placing drain strainers in your sinks, tubs, and showers, things like food particles and hair are less likely to be washed away to accumulate and clog pipes. Additionally, avoid the temptation to wash away oily residue, coffee grounds, or anything that has the potential to become lodged in pipes.

  • Avoid flushing paper wastes. Numerous paper products are marketed as being flushable, but will inevitably lead to pipe blockages over time. Rather than risking it, get in the habit of placing these items in a garbage can.

  • Clean shower and bath drains regularly. This will prevent the accumulation of dirt, grime, and soap scum, which often leads to clogged pipes.

Tip #3: Address Minor Issues

Taking time to recognize minor plumbing issues and addressing them right away will help alleviate major headaches later on. While dealing with plumbing issues is certainly inconvenient, depending on the scope of the problem, repairs can be quite expensive, but even worse, the safety of your family could be compromised.

Some of the most common signs to be aware of include:

  • Water leaks. Seemingly minor issues such as a dripping faucet or a running toilet can increase your utility bill and result major water wastage. Plumbing systems encompass lots of moving parts from faucet handles and hose lines to pipe fittings and valves, all of which wear out over time. Replace worn out or improperly installed parts as soon as possible.

  • Water spots or musty odors. Damp areas under sinks or musty smells in the house usually indicate a leak or condensation which can lead to water damage or hazardous mold.

By following these straight forward tips, you’ll improve the functionality of the plumbing in your home and avoid unexpected repairs.

Finally, plumbing systems are quite complex and should you have any concerns, leave it to the experts.
